Experience Overview

Martin Wassenaar brings more than 25 years of executive experience in property, asset management, and integrated facilities management across complex, multisite organisations in New Zealand and the Netherlands. His career spans senior leadership roles in research, healthcare, government, emergency services, aged care, and social infrastructure, giving him a uniquely broad and practical foundation as a consultant.

Most recently, Martin served as National Capital Programme Manager – Infrastructure for the Bioeconomy Science Institute, where he led strategic asset management, campus‑wide infrastructure planning, and major capital programme delivery. He developed long‑term capital planning frameworks, delivered PC2 laboratories and infrastructure upgrades, and established a national property database covering more than 230,000 sqm to support future campus planning.

As a Consultant and Interim Manager with Facilities Management Solutions, Martin provided strategic FM, asset management, and capital works leadership across government, social housing, and public sector portfolios. He rationalised national office portfolios, strengthened asset planning processes, and ensured compliance across diverse property environments.

In the emergency services sector, Martin served as Senior Facilities Manager for Wellington Free Ambulance, overseeing property operations, facilities management, and fleet services across 10 stations. He developed a regional property and infrastructure plan and improved FM service delivery through clearer performance standards and contractor oversight.

Earlier, as General Manager at Summerset Aotea, he led full property, FM, and operational functions, achieving sector‑leading occupancy and service outcomes through strong leadership and a focus on safe, high‑quality environments.

Before relocating to New Zealand, Martin spent over two decades in the Netherlands as a COO and General Manager across hospitals, aged care, disability services, and local government. He led teams of up to 400 staff, delivered major capital works programmes, implemented asset management frameworks, and managed EU‑level procurement for hard and soft FM services.

Across all roles, Martin has consistently delivered uplift in asset management maturity, operational performance, compliance, and long‑term planning. His consulting practice is built on this depth of experience—helping organisations navigate complexity, strengthen capability, and create safe, efficient, future‑ready facilities.
